GENERAL MEETING TUESDAY, June 10, 2008

Social 1/2 hour — 7 PM, Program — 7:30 PM, & Meeting 8:00 PM

‘TRANSPACIFIC YACHT RACE 1981’ Speaker: Linda Newland, Staff Commodore of Pacific Coast Yachting Association. Ten Japanese sailors and one American woman, Linda Weber-Rettie (now Newland) sailed non-stop from San Francisco to Kobe, Japan in June, 1981. Linda finished sixth out of eleven in this boat for boat non-handicapped race and still holds the record, 52 days, for a woman’s transpacific crossing Half of the fleet took the Great Circle route north and the others went via Hawaii to the west. This was the third running of this single-handed race, which had been run in 1969 and 1975 from San Francisco. Linda had raced single-handed to Hanalei Bay, Kauai the year before in her 33’ Yamaha and entered this race with the sponsorship of Suntory Liquor Company. Her boat was renamed Spirit of Suntory for the race. Competitors could use no electronic steering devices but relied on wind vanes. No electronic navigation devices were allowed, so celestial navigation was required. Also, all competitors had to communicate to the race committee daily on ham radio, which forced Linda to qualify for her novice license 30 days before the race began.

The slide show encompasses events leading up to the race, photos taken onboard during the race and the events around Japan Linda attended on behalf of her sponsor once she arrived.

Linda is a retired public education administrator, a maritime attorney, sailing instructor and is Staff Commodore and life time member of Island Yacht Club in Alameda, CA, Staff Commodore of Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PIYA’s counterpart in Northern California), past president of Recreational Boaters of California and is Staff Commodore of Pacific Coast Yachting Association. Be sure to make our June PTYC general meeting.

Summer Socials & Friday Night Cookouts

Open to Port Townsend Yacht Club Members

While many PTYC members are cruising northern climes and traveling all about, the Port Townsend Yacht Club is still gathering at the Club House during the summer months of July and August on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Although no formal meeting will be held at these Summer Socials, a guest speaker or special program will be featured at

7:30 p.m. Additionally, we will continue last year’s successful “Friday Night Cookout’ on the last Friday of July and August at 6:00 p.m. Be sure to check your e-mail for updated information.

.

What a great way for members to keep in touch, share many a good yarn and introduce PTYC to potential new members. Dave Weeding, Commodore

Future Courses

(November, December Timeframe depending on interest)

OUPV (Six Pac) License (63 hours of instruction) $900 per person

Master's License (80 hours of instruction. $1200 per person (endorsements would be offered at no additional cost.)

Becoming a Coast Guard Licensed Captain
Terms to Know: (The following terms will help you understand the License explanations below)
• Day of Sea Time: One day consists of a minimum of 4 hours underway (not at the dock or anchor!)
• Uninspected Vessel: A vessel which does not require inspection from the USCG but meets CFR "C" regs.
• Inspected Vessel:  A vessel which requires annual inspection by the Coast Guard.  Meets CFR "T" regs.
• Routing:  The licenses are applicable on Inland waters, Near Coastal or both.  Your experience will determine the         waters you qualify for.
• Inland waters:  Waters shoreward of Demarcation lines.  Examples: Puget Sound, Columbia River, Great Lakes, most harbors.
• Near Coastal:  Waters seaward of Demarcation lines.  Examples: All coastal waters around the U.S., most foreign waters.
• Gross Tonnage:  The CG uses this type of vessel measurement to determine the scope of your license - see Gross Tonnage Form.

OUPV (Six Pack)
The Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels allows you to take six or fewer passengers for hire on uninspected vessels up to 100 gross tons. This is an excellent license for delivery work or running your own vessel for charter. Sailing vessels are included with the OUPV.

OUPV Requirements
• 360 days experience on Inland or Near Coastal waters
• 90 days (of the 360 total) must be within the last 3 years
• 90 days (of the 360 total) on Great Lakes to obtain a Great Lakes routing Sea Time
• 90 days (of the 360 total) on Near Coastal waters to obtain a Near Coastal routing.

Masters
Master Licenses allow you to take an unlimited number of passengers on inspected vessels. They have tonnage limitations and are issued in 25 ton increments up to 100 tons depending on your experience and sea time evaluation. A sailing endorsement is required for operation sailboats under a master license.

Masters Requirements
• Same requirements as OUPV with the following additions:
• For a Near Coastal route, you need 720 total days with at least 360 of these on Near Coastal waters.
• For a sailing endorsement, minimum of 180 days on sailing vessels
• Tonnage is awarded by the size of vessel on which a minimum of 45 days of recent time has been accrued.

Endorsements
Sailing endorsements are available for your Masters License if you meet the above qualifications.  This is not a separate License, but is added to your license at the time of issuance.  Curriculum is approved to offer Sailing endorsements in class using our own curriculum and materials.

A Commercial Assistance Towing endorsement may be added to both your OUPV and Masters License.  This allows you to be compensated for towing disabled vessels etc.  It also is required if you wish to work on the various "vessel assist" programs.  Curriculum prepares you for this endorsement and offers it right in class
